RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
