Minister States Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been advised to avoid discussing classified matters in all cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret information while travelling in China-made cars.

The minister stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Defence Context

This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

This wider security environment highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of government activities, from transport usage to communication practices.
