The Princess of Wales's Traditional Festive Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary festive musical service at the historic Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will hear a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The central message of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a message before the carol service.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to public life following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by talented youth performers supported by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
